Throat Punch Thursday ~ Dr.Oz of Arsenic and Apple Juice

Throat Punch Thursday~Dr.Oz, Arsenic, Apple Juice

Arsenic is harmless?

Dr.Oz of Arsenic and Apple Juice~ I won’t lie, I was a little disturbed when I heard the report last month about Mott’s apple juice and it’s high amounts of arsenic. Arsenic?? Yes, I know, like everybody else who’s ever taken a science class in elementary school, that apple seeds have arsenic in them. I know this.I try to be a good crunchy mom. I guess, when it came to giving my girls apple juice, organic all natural APPLE JUICE, I was so worried about pesticides and hormones that I completely forgot about the effing arsenic inside the damn apple. You know the apple that they use to make the apple juice. Arsenic, you sneaky little bastard.

When Dr. Oz televised his findings of arsenic in apple juice, I was not fear mongered into being cautious, I was reminded once again to put cut back apple juice on the list. One more thing for that neverending list. People are all pissed and bent out of shape, making Dr OZ the villain because they don’t want to hear what he’s saying. I know we’ve all been giving our kids copious amounts of apple juice in those damn sippy cups. Let’s be real, Organic milk is expensive and it spoils a hell of a lot faster in the hot sun in those sippy cups than any arsenic ridden apple juice. We didn’t know any better. We gave our kids apple juice because we thought it was healthier than the Kool-Aid and Tang we were given as kids. NO? Was that just my house?

Dr.Oz, Apple juice, Arsenic

Deborah L.Rothenberg

Poor Dr.Oz nobody likes the Arsenic Police

Problem is that we don’t really hate Dr. oz for sharing his findings. He just happens to be the messenger bringing the bad news and well, we all know what happens to the messenger. The argument is that arsenic in small doses ( those allowed by the FDA, who by the way probably doesn’t allow their own children to drink the apple juice..I’m just sayin’) is not harmful. Dr.Oz argues that we don’t know the long term effects of this higher dose of  arsenic. I say, at what level is giving poison to your child acceptable? I think most of you would agree that the correct answer is NONE! What next , will the out of control Dr.Besser show up and tell me red-faced that arsenic is harmless? Oh yeah? Dr.Besser how much rat poisoning is safe for human consumption? Ridiculous? Exactly, my point!

Throat punch goes to anyone who tries to tell me that ANY amount of arsenic is healthy for my girls to drink. It may be harmless but it may be poisonous. Either way, I don’t want to take the gamble on arsenic when the cost is my girls’ health. I know that it seems that nowadays everything has some sort of carcinogen, poison, pesticide, hormone, antibiotic, or poison in it or maybe we just never saw the arsenic on the label because we were too busy throwing stones at the fear mongering messenger. What are your thoughts on the arsenic in apple juice dilemma? Is this study ( or just the reminder of the topic) enough to scare you straight on the arsenic and apple juice situation? Will you be thinking twice before filling your baby’s sippy cup with arsenic apple juice next time? I know I will. Or do you agree with Dr.Besser that arsenic is harmless in small doses?

Just Say no to Arsenic in your baby’s apple juice

Yes, that is why we originally cut back..the sugar but arsenic pretty much seals the deal that they will be drinking something else.Call me a crazy over protective helicoptering Mommy but I didn’t cook those monkeys for 10 months, stretch out my body and give birth to have arsenic poison them slowly because the FDA says its OK. If they trust it they can experiment on their own kiddies.:)

This was an eye opener, I had no idea. I don’t give my daughter apple juice because I personally don’t like it. We’ll drink orange juice instead (not in large doses).

I think that it’s a shame that most of our foods are laced with something. I won’t be buying apple juice in the future, and organic milk is expensive but I do it.

If she’s not nursing, then she has organic milk, if not that water. No amount of arsenic is okay.

Who knows. It’s so overwhelming how much crap is in our food. We don’t do much juice because of the sugar content. She does milk and water, some OJ, a bit of fruit punch. AY AY AY.

Scary right? I told my husband if the girls have withdrawal I can always get a juicer and make it myself..eliminate the seeds with the arsenic. Because, you know, my list of shit to do just doesn’t seem quite long enough:)LOL But, seriously, better I never sleep again than I give my girls arsenic.

I had no idea! My kids only have juice of any kind at birthday parties and special occasions. So do we just switch to grape juice only then?

Or maybe it should be throat punch to anyone who blindly believes what Dr. Oz says over the rest of the scientific community.

The FDA sent him all sorts of evidence (heaven forbid) that his results were misleading because

(a) they weren,t replicated by several independent labs (like the rest of the scientific community does)

and

(b) astonishingly, he did not test for the TYPE of arsenic, i.e. one is very dangerous while the other is not.

Even is you’re the type of person who frees feel to dismiss the FDA (and rest of the scientific community) because of some conspiracy for which no evidence exists, can you at least admit that he should have remedied A & B above? Simply hire 2 more labs and ask them to test for the two types of arsenic?

Perhaps, though I am not blindly believing anything. It’s a fact that arsenic is in apple seeds and it’s a fact that if you ground up those seeds in the juice making process, trace amounts of arsenic will be present. I’m not saying Dr.Oz is right or wrong.I;m just saying that for me…any amount is too much. I;m sorry if that makes you feel that I deserve a throat punch. Of course he should do more research and I am not saying that anyone who gives their child apple juice is intentionally trying to harm them. I am simply saying that I am choosing not to give my daughters anymore apple juice unless I make it and know there is no seeds in it. You don’t know me or you would know 2 things 1) I do not dismiss scientific research and 2) this is Throat Punch Thursday..it’s tongue in cheek. It is mocking the crazy shit that keeps making the news. I’m sorry if you were offended. Feel free to carry on and consume the apple juice,I’m not judging. Though, I feel that you may be judging me for not giving my daughters apple juice. Aside from the arsenic, apple juice is practically completely sugar and I would like my girls to keep their teeth in their head:) P.S. Thanks for stopping by The TRUTH about Motherhood.

No, you’re saying that Dr. Oz is right when you say that he’s not fear mongering and that people are bent out of shape because they don’t like what he’s saying.

I’m bent out of shape because he’s misleading the public and fear mongering. What he did wasn’t sloppy, it was unacceptable and pandering for ratings.

And the notion that any amount is too much seems to make sense, but the fact is that organic forms of arsenic are literally unavoidable in trace amounts. In all likelihood you gave your children trace amounts of arsenic today.

I realize that everyone doesn’t understand this (why would they?), and this is precisely why what Oz did is so wrong. It leads to a lack of confidence in science (why should I listen to anything when they don’t see to know anything?) and unnecessary fear and guilt.

Oz didnt do anything wrong. All he did was speak his mind and it’s great he has a huge outlet like a TV show to do so. He has the right to do so because of that little thing called the 5th amendment.

You don’t have to watch his show or listen to anything he says (or this blog). Anyone who DOES listen to him or does their own research chooses to do so and if they believe him then again that’s their choice. Just because you don’t like what he has to say doesn’t mean he is wrong.

Tomorrow you may have an opinion on your blog that no one else agrees with but does that mean you have to shut your mouth and not voice it? Of course not because it’s your blog and anyone who reads it chooses to even though they may not agree with anything you say.

You are doing exactly what she said in her blog post – you are shooting the messenger and judging him just for talking and relaying a message.

Get over it.

Dang it!! One more thing to not buy. Ugh.
The boys have a little bit of it in the morning but they only get water in their “all-day-long” cups.

Also? Totally random, but I laugh every time I see that kangaroo.

Dr. Oz is wrong. He admits he gives his own children apple juice. His false report is like yelling “fire” in a crowded theater. Please do some research for yourselves before believing whatever Dr. Oz chooses to tell you.
