Tonight’s Throat Punch is brought to you by a judgmental doctor. Don’t get me wrong some of my favorite people in the world are doctors; my brother in law, one of my best friends to name a few. I realize that they are, in fact, human; just like you and I. But I expect a standard of professionalism when they are practicing medicine. What they say at home, that’s between them and their HIPAA conscience. But when a doctor brings assumption and judgment into the exam room, we have a problem .
I’ve been having persistent coughing fits for the past 2 weeks and decided to go to the local RediMed, as I don’t have a GP here yet. The doctor walked in the exam room ( after I had waited 2 hours to see her) with a less than enthusiastic attitude, as if I had done something to deserve to be sick. It was apparent from the moment she walked into the room looking through her nose at me, that she was a judgmental doctor. Worse still a cold bitch, as the room dropped 10 degrees when she walked in.
She began by asking me the standard questions. How long have you had the cough? Are you feeling any sinus pressure? Are you feeling any pressure in your ears? I say yes. She asked, “Pressure? or PAIN?” Her tone was as if I had misunderstood her question. I had not. She had a very thick accent. I’ve grown up immersed in thick accent as my fathers mother tongue is not English. I don’t usually have an issue understanding accents but hers was quite thick.
“Do you have any allergies?” Yes, I have seasonal allergies.
“When you cough are you bringing anything up? Yes (I’m assuming she was referring to phlegm).
This is when it all fell apart.
At this point she is looking at me, as if I have totally done something wrong, “You really have to watch what you are eating late at night!” I eat at 5:30 every night.
I have no f*cking idea what she is talking about.
“You must cut back on the greasy food! Take some Prilosec and stop eating these kinds of food!!!! ” She’s practically yelling. I feel as if I am on trial.
“Stop drinking all the sugar, sodas and coffee at night. You need to watch what you eat so you don’t destroy your esophagus with your unhealthy eating habits.”
I don’t!I don’t! I don’t!
What the f*ck is she talking about? Since when did a cough warrant a scolding on non-existent eating habits?
Then it hits me like a ton of rocks hurled by sizists at the fat kid. Somehow, when I was explaining to her that when I lie down at night the coughing fits get worse, she heard “I’m a big fat asshole who has acid reflux because I can’t control my binge eating at night. I drink 2 liters of soda and pots of coffee with reckless abandon because I just don’t give a shit about my health!”
She was being very condescending and rude.
I know I am out of shape. I am heavier than I ever wanted to be.
I DO NOT HAVE ACID REFLUX.
I HAVE NEVER HAD HEARTBURN. I don’t even know what it feels like.
I came in for COUGHING FITS not a judgmental doctor with a side of asshole bedside manner. Who did she think she was?
I seldom drink caffeine, never at night. I’ve never been a binge eater. I’m a restrictor. To add insult to injury, I’m pretty sure that the reason I am as heavy as I am now is partly from all the damage I did to my body when I was in the throes of my 8 year battle with eating disorders. Doesn’t this bitch know I have body dysmorphic disorder?
Of course she doesn’t, she’s just the freaking drive thru of doctors and she doesn’t have my full medical records. That insensitive bitch just used her judgmental doctor powers on someone who has to talk herself into accepting herself on a daily basis. I’ve never felt so ugly in my life.
I was deflated. Enraged. Wanted to throat punch her and cry simultaneously. On top of everything else, it’s shark week and I’m not feeling especially happy with excessive water weight that I’m holding.

I have been sick all week and, as such, have not had a chance to get my fashion on. Sure, I could have just pulled an amazing outfit off of Polyvore.com or Pinterest but I like to have hands on experience with the pieces before I tell you to love them. Candy for children as rewards is like giving candy to a baby, and about as responsible. In a world where kids are being put on diets and touted as being problems for their obesity, how is it tolerated that some teachers are still using sweets as a reward system for educational accomplishments or good behavior? Are you in shock? I am and I am pissed off.
I have encountered teachers who group children into different candy groups and if they accomplish their tasks for the day, they are rewarded with that treat. The treats range from sweet sugary cereals, to skittles, M&Ms, and gummy bears to name a few. Why?
Children accumulate tickets for good behavior or good listening skills, they can then cash the tickets in for sweets or special treats like lunch with the teacher or sitting in a special place. Of course, you have to save a lot more tickets to earn the non-sugary rewards. It is almost as if the children are being encouraged to take the easy reward, the route of instant gratification. Isn’t that how we’ve gotten to the current status of obesity in this country?
I am not a fanatic. I do believe that kids can enjoy the occasional piece of candy, in moderation. Candy is not the devil but it is also in no way a necessity in a child’s life. Candy for children as a special treat is fine but it should not be used as a reward system and given and withheld dependent on a child’s achievements. By doing this, we are teaching children to associate food with celebrations and achievement. We are teaching our children to eat their feelings. The 6 year old buying chocolate to celebrate knowing her addition facts is the same 500 pound woman who will be drinking a 32 ounce coke in the morning to “celebrate” waking up.
From personal experience, I know how hard it is to change your path of bad eating habits once they are learned. Those children that the teacher is giving candy and pop ( oh yes, they can earn tickets for pop too! I don’t even allow my girls to have pop at home and all they need to do is earn enough tickets, for doing what they are supposed to be doing anyways, and they can buy soda pop and candy at free will) to are being expected to have self- control that is most likely beyond their maturity level. I think it’s ridiculous. I have had to sit my daughter down and explain that she is not allowed to purchase ‘treats’ at school that she is not allowed at home. I also explained the effects that sugar has on your health, your teeth, the sugar highs and crashes, etc.
This is being done in a first grade class. What first grader do you know that wouldn’t eat themselves sick on sugar if given the chance? I’m pissed that they are given this option. Aren’t there nutrition guidelines enforced on school lunches for this very reason? This teacher’s reward system, undermines the entire shift in nutritional focus.How would you approach the teacher? I’ve told my daughter not to take the candy and she listens. But why should she have to feel punished? I think the candy should not be an option. What do you think about candy for children as a reward system for good behavior and good grades?

Life Changes~What do I want to say? It feels like I’ve been missing from here a lot lately. I miss my home. This blog is my home. I miss my people. I miss the interaction and the back and forth. Lots has been going on behind the scenes lately. As many of you know, I have started writing at a few different places around the internet; Smart Mom Style, Aiming Low, Modern Home Modern Baby and the Stir. I am truly blessed, even if unexpectedly so.
There are lots of other changes going on too here at our home. We’ll be moving this summer and our house has still not sold and that is weighing heavily on my mind and my heart. I’ve been doing a lot of praying for patience and understanding. The girls are growing up fast. I blinked and now our life is about Spring Breaks and ballet recitals. It used to be all about time together and having fun and now it’s all turning to obligation. I feel out of my depth on many levels and yet there is still more changes going on.Things that I can’t even think about with too much thought or my head may explode from all of the overwhelming possibilities.
This is where I have been lately. Then there was spring break. I so welcomed and looked forward to it. It started off amazing with a trip to Castaway Bay indoor water park. The girls adored it. The Big Guy and I had a blast just watching them run around from activity to activity, screaming and squealing all the way. Finally, a place they could run, jump and scream and it was perfectly acceptable, if not expected. We spent our days dripping water and surrounded by laughter and love. The Big Guy and I soaking in every single moment of togetherness with the girls. They will never be this age again. There will never be another first trip to the water park. Each night we collapsed into bed, snuggled together excitedly recounting the thrill of the day. Lots of sweet memories were made at Castaway Bay, not the least of which was my Mommy alone time spent in the spa with my pedicurist Laura Williams. Not only was there peace and quiet and an amazing pedicure to be had, Laura had a vibrant personality and a pleasing demeanor. She made the pedicure an experience. Then we returned home.
The next day, we spent with Grandma having lunch at our favorite spot and watching ,Mirror, Mirror; a special treat for the girls. We were relishing every single moment together, just as I had planned and then I got sick! Not just a little case of the sniffles, this is a knock down, drag out, can’t lift your head kind of illness. It was like the devil spawn of the worst head cold you’ve ever had the misfortune of catching and the flu on crack. I woke up Tuesday morning feeling like I had been run over by a mack truck. I stayed there, in bed, trying not to die the entire day. The week pretty much plateaued at that point.
I’m slowly recovering from the illness, the girls are on their last day of spring break and I am still overwhelmed with a lot of choices that I need to make soon. How do you embrace the changes in your life?

Since November, I don’t know what the fuck is wrong with me. Is it my ADHD? Perhaps, its SAD? Is it the election? Is it perimenopause? Not enough “me” time? Or am I just tapped, touched out and overwhelmed? I don’t know, but I don’t think I’m alone. I’m moved to tears by everything. I feel like I can’t physically feel happiness. Everyone wants everything from me and I have nothing left to give. This is me, feeling like a trapped animal. I just want to flee my life. This isn’t just some sad, perimenopausal mom’s truth about mom overwhelm and toxic relationships and friendships, it’s an all too relatable feeling amongst many women, especially moms. I’m hoping recognizing and acknowledging that I’m feeling a certain type of way, will help me find my way back to truest myself and that’s started by me setting boundaries.
I have been feeling hopelessly overwhlemed and unable to get myself out of this funk. It’s hard to explain but if you know, you know. I don’t want to die. I just don’t want to do this anymore. It’s too much. I quit. I can’t be responsible for everything and everyone anymore. It’s too much. I am being crushed beneath the weight of responsibility and obligations and have no time just to be still; to exist. I just need a break. Can’t I please be alone somewhere, away from everyone who wants and needs anything from me? It doesn’t even matter where? I just want to be somewhere where no one knows me and more importantly, nobody wants anything from me. Nothing. Not even one word.
I don’t know how this has happened but I feel lonely even though I am never alone. NEVER. I feel invisible even though I’m depended on to do everything. This makes things worse because then I feel like I’m doing manual labor not out of love but because that’s what people expect of me.
Maybe it’s anxiety. Maybe it’s because one daughter is graduating, one came home from college, and both are leaving in the fall. I’m the one juggling and checking in and checking up. No matter what happens, if a ball drops… I’m the one who dropped it. That’s my absolute awful truth about mom overwhelm.
Nothing is making sense anymore. I’m tired of trying. I’m sick of being the one always making all the effort. I quit. Friendships, relationships and acquaintances ( personal and professional) that are one-sided, I’m out. Life’s too short and I am fucking done trying to make shit work for other people’s sake. What about my sake? What about me?
Maybe this is my midlife crisis. Perhaps it’s an awakening. Maybe it’s my reckoning. I’m mad and I’m tired and it feels like we’re all driving a hundred miles an hour toward a cliff and the fucking brakes won’t work and everyone else jumped out of the vehicle but I’m still trying to save the day. Well, I don’t give a fuck about other people’s days anymore. I promise. I quit.
It’s not me, it’s them. Fuck the vehicle, let it burn. I’m jumping out and living to see another day. Setting boundaries. I’m drawing a clear and concise line in the proverbial sand. You are either with me or you’re not. You’re either reciprocating or getting left behind in 2025. I realize this sounds cold but I have friends that I’ve been trying to hold our relationship together for decades and I finally had to face the hard truth, they don’t give a fuck if they lose me so I have to reciprocate in kind.
I realized I don’t want to invest my time and energy into people who are not investing in me. Why am I caring if you’re okay if you don’t even care if I exist? This is coming from me, the woman who has object permanence. But, I am intentional about checking in on the people who matter the most. Ask anyone, I’m the one sending the Christmas cards and organizing the get togethers. I’m the one McGyvering the relationship and I’m here to tell you that I am no longer stepping into that position.
I’ve been stepping into my traumas, after a couple unexpected triggers lately. Things I thought I forgot or got passed, have been humbling the shit out of me. Why am I being punished for being traumatized? Shouldn’t the perpetrator be the one living with guilt, and random rememberings?
I grew up poor so I’m very hesitant to let go of things. Some people call it hoarding, I collect people and things, just so I never feel afraid or alone. Wow, my therapist would be so impressed by how self-aware I am these days.I have too much because I’m afraid of letting go and not having what I need after doing so. I’m terrified of letting go.
Since the election results, I’ve been overcome with hopelessness in a way I have never felt before. I’ve been through my fair share of difficult times in my life but this is different. This is beyond my control in so many ways. I’m resilient but I’m also very overwhelmed and anxious.
Being out of control is my biggest fear. I’m not a wait & see kind of person. I’m a “give me control, I’ll get us through this” kind of girl.
I’ve been going through an awakening of sorts ( a shift in perspective) and the result is that I’m getting more comfortable with the idea of letting go of people and relationships that are one-sided. Fuck unrequited love and friendship. If we don’t both put in effort, in 2025, I’m walking away and not looking back. If I go missing from your life, you’re going to have to come looking because I’m done. I’m no longer letting my happiness depend on anyone else.
