Puberty, moms, daughters, precocious puberty

Kimberly Danek Pinkson

My girls are growing so fast, in a blink of an eye puberty will be hitting us over the head like a hammer. It seems every new day brings a lost tooth, a growth spurt of some sort, a new amazing feat they can perform or skill they have learned. In all reality, I am in constant awe (you know, with the exception of those days that I feel that I am watching paint dry). I’d say between my two girls I spend 97% of my life having my breath taken away. Some days it feels like it is all going by too quickly and I just want to slow it down a bit and enjoy it more. Then my friend, whose daughter is 7, drops this bomb on me….her daughter is getting underarm and pubic hair.WHAT??? Apparently when she was giving her little girls their nightly bath, she noticed a few tufts of hair after her daughter said she couldn’t get her underarms clean. Poor kid.

Puberty before the age of 10, say what?

Yes, you could hear a pin drop when she told me that, with the exception of the thud of my jaw hitting the floor. She, like myself, tries to feed her girls a reasonably healthy diet. They are pretty diligent about the organic/no hormone milk and dairy products, eggs, fruits and veggies. Her girls are not overweight. They are an average upper-middle class Caucasian American family. Yet, her little girl is on the brink of prepubescence. This thoroughly freaked me out. Wasn’t it just yesterday that I was changing diapers? I’m still wiping asses ( I just wiped one before I sat down to write this post. Don’t worry I washed my hands). What kind of cruel world is this that little girls who are still in need of their Mommies to bathe and wipe them ….should start getting pubic hair and menstruating? Precocious Puberty;Dont be Fooled by the Name

They call it Precocious Puberty. It sounds all cute and adorable. As if cramps and mood swings are anything but terrible, especially for little girls. Don’t even get me started on the onslaught of hair growing in places you least want it. And so I am compelled to write a little  prayer to God or the Goddess Mother Nature ( whomever you believe is responsible for this early onset puberty sweeping our nation and whomever can actually do anything about it).

Dear God,

It’s Me..Truthful Mommy (I’m sure even God thinks that’s my name by now) are you there?

Please let my little girls stay little for a little while longer.

I want to cuddle them and read them to sleep.

I want to kiss their foreheads and all their booboos and make them magically all better.

I want picnics in the park, uncontrollable giggles because I act like a goofball. I want innocence and virtue.

I want to be the best thing since sliced bread, for a little while longer.

I want to get to know them a little better before they become hairy, hormonal beasts.

I want the time to bond deeper before they hit that place in puberty where I am the enemy.

The moment that I become the dumbest, most ignorable and annoying person in the world.

I’m pretty sure this happens on the first day of spotting.

I am not ready for all that just yet.

Please wait until they are passed the age of losing teeth and learning to ride bicycles before bestowing their monthly visitor upon them.

I know with puberty, precocious or otherwise, comes boys.

You know we are not ready to deal with boys!

Dear God, most of all I pray for health and happiness for my girls.

Please give them a few more years to get their feet firmly planted on who they are before turning them into someone else.

This is my mother’s prayer.

Please, God…no more pubic hair (at least not for a few more years)!

For now, let’s just say no to early onset puberty (Amen)

Puberty, Precocious or otherwise

Oh, god, that just took my breath away! Immediately upon seeing she was only 7 I was like, “Oh, it was the milk! The hormones! See! Paying more for organic pays off!”… but then to see that’s what they were drinking? Oof.

My daughter is only 3, but when she said, “Hello boys!” at the playground the other day I almost fainted. WE’RE NOT READY FOR THAT!

She did the organic milk ( as do I) . It had to be the meat!Argh, we forgot about the hormones in the meat!!!!

Oh wow! This is just scary. I remember when I was in third grade and one of my classmates started her period! In THIRD grade!!! So crazy.

That is scary. Makes me nervous about the next few years. I just think we need them to be a little more mature before we spring puberty and all that it entails on them! Here’s hoping for answered prayers:)

What?!? Seven? Unless her mother started all of that early too, it seems like artificial hormones have sneaked into the diet somewhere…..My girl is growing at exactly the same pace I did so at least there has not been anything unexpected.

We are suspecting that it was the hormones in the meat. It;s the only answer.

horrifying but true. i am starting to see some mood swings, although thankfully no more than that (8 year old daughter).
On the upside I am also seeing a burst of independence and self responsibility (mum let me dry the dishes….play witht he little kids…make my bed).
now i know i am going to get sleighted for this, but if i was ok with pumping my kid full of hormones (which i’m so not…don’t even do it to myself…) i would consider a depo injection to keep all that stuff away. it’s completely unfair that little girls should have to go through puberty and all it entails so young. so so unfair.
and as for boys. well all i can do is encourage her to keep the wonderful best friend (a boy) she has and see it as a healthy friendship that transcends gender.
long may that last. I guess from every cloud a little rain must fall.

Mine is 6 .She is a bit moody but I dont see any other signs . She too has a best friend who is a little boy and I hope that they can stay in their innocent state of mind for at least another 6 years:)Here’s to hoping!

Based on my experience (alas, with boys) I think you will become the dumbest, etc. mom on the planet when they turn 10 or 11, regardless of whether they have pubic hair.

Sorry. The rest is all good though. Good luck!

Bless your heart !! I can relate to what you are going through !! My daughter was also the very young age of barely 7 when she was diagnosed as going through Precocious Puberty. She had hair under her arms and was showing signs of possibly starting her period. We had to visit the Pediatric Endocrinologist every 3 months 2 years so they could track her progress. Blood tests, bone scans, pituitary gland MRI’s and tests…my poor baby !!! They thought they were going to have to put her on a medication to stop her Pituitary gland from kicking in to make her period start. My heart hurt soooo bad !!!! But she turned 9 and the doctors said they were going to let her body keep going at its own pace. Her body caught up a little better and she started her period at 11. Thank god !! she is now 19 and very healthy and hormonaly normal as you can tell by the gray hairs on my head !!!

Glad everything worked out. I am not actually going through Precocious Puberty, it is a friend’s daughter. But I can;t imagine the worry and stress it must bring!

So with ya here. My littlest one , Meggie is 4, is sure she has boobies. I assure you and her she doesn’t Still at random times she keeps insisting she does. As for my 6 yr old, I see hair on her legs already. Not surprising since thanks to my dad’s hairy gene I have as well. Im hoping she gets through elementary school w/o needing to shave. Also, Meggie, has a definite uni brow just like me. I had no one to help me with the teasing so heres to hoping I can help them. Also, I pray that like me they do not start their periods til Jr High. That, I can deal with. I do wish they didn’t notice boys and call them dreamy and such. *sigh* But alas, I know I did that too at their age.
