The Iron Lady, Margaret Thatcher, Dead at 87

Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister, Great Women in History“If you want something said, ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman.” — Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher was the first woman ever to serve as prime minister of Great Britain and the longest-serving British prime minister of the 20th century. This morning at age 87, Margaret Thatcher died peacefully at her home as the result of a stroke.

Margaret Thatcher was the Prime Minister of Britain when I was a child. Before the Hilary Clinton’s and Sandra Day O’Conners and Condoleezza Rice’s of the world, there was Margaret Thatcher. She was who I looked up to. She is still the woman by which all women should measure their success.

Margaret Thatcher led Britain’s Conservatives to three election victories from 1979 to 1990, the longest continuous period in office by a British prime minister since the early 19th century. Arm in arm with President Ronald Reagan, Thatcher fought communism tooth and nail and saw that the Berlin Wall was torn down in 1989.

She was considered by many to be Britain’s Ronald Reagan. They were political soul mates. The two shared distaste for communism and a passion for small government.

Reagan called Margaret thatcher the “best man in England” and she called him “the second most important man in my life.”

When you hear of great women in history, you usually think of the great women behind the great men throughout history; first ladies. Eleanor Roosevelt has always been one of my favorite strong women in history but she is best known for being President Roosevelt’s wife. Margaret Thatcher dared to be different; she was not the woman behind the man. She was the “man”. She was an outsider of the boys club of politics and she did not care.

She was the first woman to have it all; prestigious career, doting husband and beautiful children. She was called the iron lady because she was strong, independent and made her own decisions. If ever there were a woman I wanted my daughters to emulate, it would be her. She was the embodiment of what every modern woman should aspire to be; grace, intellect, sophistication and absolutely no bullshit whatsoever. She will be missed in the world.

There have been many great women in history that I can point my daughters towards to see what hard work and ambition can achieve but I am sad to hear of Margaret Thatcher’s death because there will never be another Margaret Thatcher just as there can never be another Abraham Lincoln, Neil Armstrong or Barack Obama. The mold has been broken.

May your soul rest in peace knowing that you made the world a better place. Your ripple will be felt for generations to come.

In our hearts you will never be forgotten, Margaret Thatcher.

She was truly remarkable… and honestly, one of the most quote-able women to have ever lived.

Margaret Thatcher’s daughter Carol said that she had a love-hate relationship with her daughter. . “Unloved is not the right word, but I never felt I made the grade”, she said.
