How Nutrisystem Works for Me

by Deborah Cruz

Nutrisystem, weight loss, dietLast Monday, I started Nutrisystem. I’ve been following the program for a week and I have lost 5 pounds and 4 ounces. I know that with any program you start, the first week is a big loss because you are eating better and probably moving more. I know I was. The second week is always a lot harder. So while I am ecstatic about week one’s 5 pound loss on Nutrisystem, I am completely ready for week two. I don’t want to lose the momentum and I also don’t want to let myself down, so for week 2, I plan to get even more active this week.

My little sister, who is also very health conscious and runs every day will be here this week and I plan on the two of us and our children being very active. There will be loads of walking and talking taking place and probably even more swimming and playing. That’s my goal this week, to be active for at least 30 minutes every day.

Now, you may be wondering how I lost the 5 pounds (and let’s not forget about the 4 ounces) this week. You’ve all probably heard of Nutrisystem but probably don’t know much about how the program works other than that they provide pre-packaged meals but it is so much more. If that were all it was, it would never work because as soon as you were left to your own devices you would gain it all back. Nutrisystem is a way of life, which is exactly what I needed to lose my weight. A quick fix won’t work for me. I am the tortoise in this scenario; slow and steady is the only way I will win this race.

Here is a brief outline of how it works.  I eat pre-packaged and perfectly portion sized entrees 4 times a day; breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. In case you are not familiar with Nutrisystem foods, my plan includes both shelf stable foods and frozen foods and I get dessert every single night of the week.I never feel deprived. But in addition to the 4 entrees, I also have grocery add-ins. Here is an example of one day of my food log:

Breakfast:

Nutrisystem, diet, weight loss, healthy living

NS entrée: Cinnamon Streusel Muffin

Power Fuel or Protein Drink: Chocolate Protein Shake

Smart Carb: 1 medium banana ( I add the banana to the blender with my chocolate protein shake and it is delicious!)

Morning Snack:

Power Fuel: 2 tablespoons of peanuts

Lunch:

NS Lunch Entrée: Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar

Power Fuel: 2 oz. of grilled chicken breast

Power fuel: lite cheese on salad

Vegetables: Salad Mix, Cucumbers, Carrots, mushrooms

Extra (limited to 3 day): Salad dressing, sunflower seeds

Afternoon snack:

Smart Carb: Watermelon

Dinner:

Nutrisystem, diet, weight loss, healthy living, ravioli formaggioNS Dinner Entrée: Ravioli

Smart Carb: Corn on the cob

Vegetables: Grilled zucchini and squash

Dessert:

NS Dessert Entrée: Fudge Brownie (slightly heated up)

If anyone thinks I am hungry, that is simply not the case. I am literally eating all day long. I never feel hungry and I don’t get those crazy drops in blood sugar that I used to get when I’d go too long in between meals. I’ve also started taking a multivitamin every day, drinking at least 64 ounces of water and walking or using the elliptical at least 30 minutes 4 days this week.

Another thing that is very helpful to me, since I am a listaholic is the Nutrisystem online tool. If you have ever been on WW this is very similar. You log all of your foods, measurements, and exercise, as well as get answers to any of your nutrition questions via the online support or just engage in the community for some extra moral support. It is the complete package for me.

I’m only a week in but I feel very encouraged. Just for full disclosure, there was a time this week when I found myself having to eat out. The girls had earned free personal pizzas from Pizza Hut through the school reading program, so we took them. I had a giant salad from the salad bar packed with loads of veggies with light dressing on the side. This may not seem like a big feat but for me it was because pizza is one of my favorite foods. This is possible!

[…] people join Weight Watchers or Nutrisystem, some people get FitBits and trackers, some people just put it all out there on their blogs (me) and others let social media keep them […]
