Election, Election What’s Your Function

by Deborah Cruz

election day, democracy, Romney, Obama, Presidency

Tomorrow is Election Day. This year is no joke. I am frightened. History hangs in the balance. This is a history making  election. I’ve been seeing a lot of tweets about how close the race is and how we should all stop bullying one another in this election. I agree, it is way too close. I also agree that no election should be about bullying. We should respect one anothers decision to cast our vote in any direction we see fit. I also feel that is our duty, as voters, to know the facts, weigh the options and vote for what is best for us and elect the candidate that we most strongly agree with on the most issues. It’s a process of intense elimination and employees a lot of common sense and interest.

Sure you can spend this election voting strictly partisan but then you would be an asshole.

This election is too important to mess around people. I hear people speaking about the economy. Sure, I give you that Mitt Romney is by far the more adept business man. But, honestly, President Obama was given a bag of shit economy from the last President as a welcome to the Presidency gift. No one could fix that trillion dollar mess in one term. No one. Unless they focused all their efforts on doing so. It’s like a mom who only cleans the house. What about the kids? The meals? The love and support. Sure your house is spotless but your kids are fucked up because you never hugged them and your husband’s out screwing the neighbor because you never had sex with him because you were focusing all your attention on cleaning that damn house that no one wants to live in with you anymore.

There are people who might be voting for President Obama because he is the first Afro-American president. That’s not a good reason either to vote for someone in this election.People say that President Obama has not made enough progress in his term in office. My take is that President Obama came into office like a teenager, bright-eyed and full of hope. He symbolized just that for many of us. He made campaign promises and , yes, his promises were bigger than his abilities and worse than that, life got in the way. You can not plan for the presidency, no more than you can plan for life. Well, you can plan and God laughs and then whatever is going to happen is going to happen. He may have fallen short in his accomplishments but it was not for lack of trying and I think he has made the most of what he was given.

Honestly, none of that even matters anymore because the Republicans have stated again and again in this election that they do not respect women’s rights.

I stick by my statement that every person has the right to choose for themselves who to vote for, what’s important to them, what they want for their future. Myself, I can not vote for anyone who might jeopardize the rights of women and I can not in good conscience vote for men who so obviously do not consider women their intellectual or human equals, I don’t care what they can do for the economy because my human rights as a woman and my right to my own reproductive business and that of my daughter and my daughters’ daughters means so much more than any economic bail out.

Whether you are black or white or green, you must use your brain and heart in conjunction to vote for what feels best for you. At the end of the day, you have to live with the choice you make, the vote you cast so vote wisely. For me, it simply comes down to this, what matters most, the state of the economy or the state of women’s rights? For me, that is a no brainer, people always trump money. If that makes me a bleeding heart liberal or a tree hugging hippie or a whore democrat ( because yes, I have been called all three this election) than so be it. I vote with my heart and my brain, in conjunction. I weigh my options and I cast my vote. I do not affiliate myself with just one party. I am neither elephant nor ass. I’ve been both in my lifetime. I am human. I am voting like a human in this election and I hope you will do the same.

Wow, girl. Powerful post. I somehow managed to write a post without saying who I voted for. You have balls. I do not. =)

[…] I am a raging, in-your-face feminist that has the audacity to believe that men and women are equal in value as human beings and as such, should be treated with equal rights and respect in the world. I don’t believe that women are better than men. I don’t hate men. I don’t even want it all. I just want to live life on my terms with basic human rights. […]
