Lena Dunham Bares it All

by Deborah Cruz

Throat Punch Thursday,Jersey Bridgeman, Zachary Holly, murder, rape

So, apparently, Howard Stern made a joke about Lena Dunham being fat and looking like Jonah Hill. Which is really, whatever, its Howard Stern, it’s not like an insult coming from Ryan Gosling or George Clooney. It’s an insult coming from a shock jock with bad hair, a big nose and an even worse attitude. I love Howard Stern but you have got to admit, he’s not the nicest guy. He’s kind of a raging asshole and that’s what we love about him but sometimes he takes shit a little too far and I think comparing a young woman in television to Jonah Hill is definitely not nice. Jonah Hill is funny but no woman wants to be compared to a man shaped like Humpty Dumpty.

I believe his exact statement was this,

It’s a little fat girl who kinda looks like Jonah Hill and she keeps taking her clothes off and it kind of feels like rape. She seems — it’s like — I don’t want to see that,” he scoffed at the time.

Look. I will admit it, I love “Girls” and even I find Dunham’s character, Hanna, slightly annoying. I find her annoying because she’s that girl that drives you up a wall because she thinks she can do anything but she is so self-absorbed, narcissistic and completely out of touch with reality that you want to punch her in the face sometimes. But hey, take a look at your journals; she is right on the money as to how most of us were in our 20s. I know I was. Over all, I love Lena Dunham and her, in real life, I don’t give a shit attitude. She’s very pro inner beauty and intelligence and fortitude. She stands up for whats he believes in and she’s balls to the wall. I love that strength.

Lena Dunham is Awesome

And I think it’s awesome that she is so comfortable with her body on the show that she runs around naked a lot of the time.

After receiving a media shit storm in response to his asshole remarks, Stern apologized and Dunham called into the show to play nice and show that there were no hard feelings.  The conversation went like this:

“I’m not that fat, Howard,” she said. “I don’t mean to take major issue with you about this. I’m not super thin, but I’m thin for, like, Detroit.”

Stern agreed, explaining that he just meant that she often played up the “fat angle” on the show.

“You’re not obese or anything,” he allowed.

“Thank you. Another thing for my gravestone.”

And now, I am wondering what the fuck she meant by, “I’m thin for, like, Detroit.”

I mean, if you are comfortable with your own body why throw the good people of Detroit under the bus? Dunham was so strong standing up for who she is and her body size and then he made her waiver. She conceded that well; at least I am thin for Detroit.  What does that even mean? Is Detroit known for their obesity because I thought they were known for the automobile industry?

Howard Stern is whats wrong with our society’s perception of women. Women can try as hard as they want to be comfortable with their body and there will always be someone, usually a man, standing there with low self-esteem to make her feel ugly, no matter how beautiful or successful she might be. Even if all her intelligence tells her that she is good enough, all it takes is for someone to make her question herself and then the doubt sets in and the comfort is gone.

I think Lena Dunham is fucking awesome and hope she continues to rock “girls”. I also hope that she reconsiders what she says or at least how she says it. Why not stop at, I’m not fat or I’m thin. Or why defend it at all? Why does it have to be conditional; I’m thin for Detroit? Just tell Stern he deserves a throat punch and when he is perfect, he can call you names. Sticks and stones.

Lena Dunham you’re better than that.
