Planned Parenthood Fighting for Your Right to Post-Birth Abortion

by Deborah Cruz

baby, planned parenthood, post-birth abortionPlanned Parenthood may single handedly end legal abortion with their opposition to the Infants Born Alive Act in the name of post-birth abortions.Politicians in Florida are currently debating whether or not to pass the Infants Born Alive Act, which would require physicians to give life saving medical attention to babies born alive after a botched abortion. Planned Parenthood says no. What? How can we even be having this conversation? If a baby can survive an abortion, then I say let that baby live. That kid’s a miracle and surely God, or the universe or whatever you choose to believe in, has big plans for that kid.

Look, I’ve made no secret about the fact that I am pro-choice. I believe in a woman’s right to choose whether or not to continue a pregnancy but once a baby is born alive, if you choose to let it die or kill it, You.Are.A.Murderer! That is infantacide.End of discussion.

When I first saw the video of Alisa LaPolt Snow, the lobbyist representing the Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates testifying on behalf of the organization, I thought I must have stumbled onto a story on the Onion. Surely this horrifying topic was a joke. But it wasn’t. Ms. Snow, as you can see from the video, clearly states multiple times that the decision to kill an infant who survives a failed abortion should be left to the woman seeking the abortion and her physician. Nope! It is murder to let a child born alive die. It is negligence. It’s fucked up is what it is.

I wasn’t the only one shocked at the words coming out of Ms. Snow’s mouth. Florida legislators when considering the bill to require abortionists to provide medical care to an infant who survives an abortion were shocked during a committee hearing this week when a Planned Parenthood official endorsed a right to post-birth abortion.

They asked her the same question several times in multiple ways and kept getting the same vague answer.

“So, um, it is just really hard for me to even ask you this question because I’m almost in disbelief,” said Rep. Jim Boyd. “If a baby is born on a table as a result of a botched abortion, what would Planned Parenthood want to have happen to that child that is struggling for life?”

“We believe that any decision that’s made should be left up to the woman, her family, and the physician,” said Planned Parenthood lobbyist Snow.

Rep. Daniel Davis then asked Snow, “What happens in a situation where a baby is alive, breathing on a table, moving. What do your physicians do at that point?”

“I do not have that information,” Snow replied. “I am not a physician, I am not an abortion provider. So I do not have that information.”

Rep. Jose Oliva followed up, asking the Planned Parenthood official, “You stated that a baby born alive on a table as a result of a botched abortion that that decision should be left to the doctor and the family. Is that what you’re saying?”

Again, Snow replied, “That decision should be between the patient and the health care provider.”

I am and have always been an advocate of choice but I would never advocate for what Planned Parenthood is asking for. I could never let a child, who has been born into the world and is alive, die not for anyone’s rights because for everyone, with perhaps the exception of reason and Planned Parenthood, a child in the world alive is a person and is entitled to the right to his or her life. If the only choices were legalized abortion with the refusal of the Infants Born Alive Act or no abortion, I’d have to opt for no abortion that’s how messed up this conversation is.

Planned Parenthood you are setting back abortion rights with your crazy refusal to give a baby who survives a failed abortion life saving medical attention because it may be an inconvenience or the mother is pissed because the abortion didn’t take or the fucking doctor just doesn’t feel like it. The things said by Alisa LaPolt Snow on behalf of Planned Parenthood have horrified and disgusted me. I can’t believe I am saying this but I think government needs to step in and pass this act so that these babies born alive are given a fighting chance.

What do you think of Planned Parenthood’s refusal to adhere to the Infants Born Alive Act?
