Throat Punch Thursday ~ Chick-Fil-A Bigots of the World Unite Edition

Chick-Fil-A You Deserve A Throat Punch

We’ve all heard about the Chick-Fil-A fiasco with their COO Dan Cathy telling the world that he is in opposition to same-sex marriage. On Wednesday, dubbed “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” by former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee lines were stretching out front doors and around the parking lots; packed with customers coming out to support company chief executive Dan Cathy, who recently came out against gay marriage with statements that have polarized lovers of the Chick-Fil-A. I used to love Chick-Fil-A but I refuse to eat at a company that has such disdain for part of the population.

I had no idea what Chick-Fil-A Appreciation day was or that it was taking place yesterday. Imagine my surprise when I took my little girls out to lunch at the mall and the line circled the entire food court. Surely, this was more than just a lunchtime rush especially since local police was working the crowd and beefed up mall security.

Waiting for Throat Punches at Chick-Fil-A?

My girls were eyeballing Panda Express but I didn’t know where this line led; Panda Express is located directly next to Chick-Fil-A. I walked up to the ever-growing line and asked one of the patrons in the line, “Excuse me, what is this line for?” To which they proudly answered with a big smile (chest puffed out and all) “ This is Chick-Fil-A Appreciation day. We support Dan Cathy and do not support gay marriage.” Where the hell is the ACLU when you need them?

I was appalled and disgusted because this is not about God this is about intolerance. These bigots are using God as an excuse to be intolerant of others. As the story goes, God made everyone and God makes no mistakes so explain to me how same sex marriage is wrong? Are we saying that God makes mistakes? Why is it our business who anyone loves? Isn’t God the only one who can make that judgment? Who are we to speak for God?

I am not a theologian or a homosexual, nor am I God so I can’t pretend to know their hearts and minds. I am a human and as a human being, it doesn’t feel right to judge a person for who they love or who they are born to be in this world. I am religious but I am not a bigot and I don’t think the two go hand in hand. I believe that all humans deserve the rights to freedom of choice, freedom of thought and freedom of love.

Chick-Fil-A summit for intolerant people

I was sickened by the pride with which the customers I spoke with flaunted their disdain for same sex marriage. They spoke of it as if the very thought made them physically ill and, in my book, that is intolerance. Intolerance to that degree scares me for those who are not being tolerated. My mind goes to places like the KKK, Nazi Germany and other scenarios that ended in genocide.

I will no longer be eating at Chick-Fil-A because I refuse to give money to bigots. I understand that we are all entitled to our beliefs and freedom of speech. Dan Cathy can believe whatever he wants but he also has to accept the cost of his actions. He’s told the world of his intolerance and now Chick-Fil-A is ground zero for the culture war. This is why Chick-Fil-A Appreciation day supporters are receiving my throat punch today.

What do you think of hating a person because of who they choose to love? Did you choose whom you loved or did love choose you? The heart wants what the heart wants.

Do you support the Chick-Fil-A kiss in that will be taking place tomorrow?

I’ve decided that my family and I can no longer eat at CFA. I really wrestled with the decision, but I support same sex marriage and don’t want to be a hypocrite.

Me too. I love their iced tea but I can’t support a company who is openly discriminatory against anyone. I couldn’t believe how excited these people were to be in that line. More surprisingly, I couldn’t believe how offended I was that they were.

‘Intolerance’ is not respecting the right of another to have a different view than your own. Which you have just demonstrated. Tolerance is exactly the opposite. I support a business owner’s right to be opposed to gay marriage, just as I support anyone else to be in favor of it. Calling everyone who supported Chick-Fil-A yesterday a bigot and a hater is just plain untrue. I will acknowledge that there are people on BOTH SIDES of this argument that hate, but that is not the case for the majority. Having a different view and being able to express it is the right of every citizen. I hope that we can see some REAL TOLERANCE regarding this issue from both sides.

I understand what you are saying but when I asked the people in the line at our chik-fil-a they answered that they are against gay marriage which offends me that they think their opinion is the only one. I support everyone’s choice to choose what they want. But I am just calling it as I saw it from my stand point after talking to people in the lines.

(Disclaimer: the *you* in this comment is generic, not personal)
I personally patronize businesses based on the quality, convenience, and price of their products/services, not their political or social agendas. Chick Fil A>McDonalds. Apple>Microsoft. Google>Internet Explorer. I frequent Starbucks not because they are the cheapest, or because they are the best, or because they are L/G activists; they are just more accessible than any other flipping coffee house. I honestly do not have time to research what charity/group receives a dollar from every place I decide to do business. It’s honestly that plain and simple. I do not wait in line for chicken sandwiches, coffee, movie tickets, or a chance to see a famous person talk. I don’t even wait in line to vote; I chose to do that when it is less busy and I can attend to the other things on my personal day’s agenda. I do not hate those who disagree with me. My best friends are either Muslim or Atheist/Agnostic. A lot of people that share my political/religious views nauseate me due to their close mindedness. But that close mindedness has recently been spewing hate from every side. I have my opinions/belief/thoughts. I have the right to view the world however I see fit, as do you, regardless of the whys.
Personally, I do not care if someone is gay or straight, as long as they are committed to their relationship. It isn’t what the God of my personal religion wants, but neither is rampant divorce or shacking up or having many babies’ daddies. But I also know not everyone believes in the God of my religion, and I do not hate or force conformation on those around me. But I also expect those around me to not hate me for my views.

Thank you for posting my comment and taking the time to respond. I’ve seen so many hot heads posting about this issue and not giving any room for calm, thoughtful discussion. It all just goes straight to bashing.

In my book calling even one person a bigot and intolerant is a big deal. Your post is worded to be directed at anyone who supported Chick-Fil-A and traditional marriage, not just those you directly spoke with. I acknowledge you have the right to do so on your blog, or anywhere else for that matter. 🙂

I hope this next part reads well. I put a lot of thought into the wording, I hope that comes through. I’m genuinely trying to understand your point of view, it’s not intended to be snarky.

I’m curious how you determined where to draw that line? You seem pretty sure of where you stand on this issue. One could say that after reading your post you feel this is the only ‘right’ way to believe. How is your being offended at their responses different than someone reading your post and being offended?

I guess the bigger questions are:

How could they have answered your question that wouldn’t have offended you?

Was it that they had an opinion that you didn’t agree with that offended you?

How do we as people with differing views happily coexist in a world where everyone just wants to be right?

I do not agree with their opinion. I think people should be able to love whoever they want and marry whoever they want and it’s not my business. TO be honest,I think I would have been less offended if they weren’t so in my face , almost obnoxious, with their answer. It was truly as if they were saying and so what you want to fight? That’s how the group I talked to were reacting to me. They were very angry and I hadn’t even said anything about my opinion. I genuinely had no idea why they were in line but my question was met with a really shitty attitude.
I don’t think my way of thinking is the only way to believe. But I think there is a respectful way to disagree and then there is a way to be obnoxious about it. I have many friends with whom I have a different opinion with on this subject BUT they are entitled to their opinion and I am entitled to mine. I don’t try to convert their way of thinking and they don’t try to convert mine. We may have thoughtful debate about the topic but in the end, we respect the fact that the other one has their own opinion even if we disagree of the way they are thinking.
Thanks for your thoughtful engagement on this subject. I too wish that we could see some real tolerance on both sides. Can’t we all just live and let live:)
